Funding sources

There are only two sources of funds for any business - your own money or someone else's.

Your own funds

Your own money comes from personal savings, shares, money released from personal assets, employment income or from existing business operations.

You may get a boost from a cash windfall or even a redundancy payment.  This can provide enough capital to start or expand a business.  If you won't risk your own money in your business idea, how can you expect anyone else to back it?  However, if your personal circumstances don't allow this, with a solid business plan you should be able to borrow money.

Many people start a business whilst still carrying on a job elsewhere, perhaps working for themselves in the evenings or at weekends.  Their disposable income helps to fund the business until it becomes established.

Available Funding

The Information Services, part of Business West, have produced a single funding document.  This document lists a multitude of funds that are available and is continually updated.  To get the current version and guidance on the funds available telephone 01275 373 373.

Business Link launched two new publications in January 2005: The No-Nonsense Guide to Small Business Funding and The No-Nonsense Guide to Finance for High Growth Companies.  These FREE guides provide objective information into how and where to obtain the most appropriate financial advice, and how to consider the best mix of funding options.  The information is illustrated with advice from industry experts and practical experiences from businesses.  Visit DTI publications orderline or call 0870 150 2500.
