Bank Accounts
It is advisable to keep business and personal finances separate (see Inland Revenue), so every business needs a separate bank account. Choose a bank that offers convenience and the services that you need:
- Do you need to get cash regularly?
- How often do you need to lodge cheques?
- How frequently will you need to visit the branch?
- Can you use electronic banking?
- Is there telephone banking?
Bank Services
Electronic or telephone banking may be essential when trying to spend the working day building up your business.
Most high street banks offer free banking for new business start-ups. To find the latest deals, browse the websites of the banks you are considering using. Are they offering good rates of interest on money held on deposit, or on a current account? What charges are levied and when? Is Internet banking free of charge?
Many banks have small business advisors available either in the branch or via the telephone. They should be able to help with aspects of financial management such as credit control procedures, cash flow management, loan applications and business planning. A bank may also offer a factoring service to help maintain cash flow. Explore their leasing facilities when considering a capital purchase.
Some banks offer start-up advice and produce useful booklets to help small businesses - look at the range of help and advice offered on their website or in the branch.
