Structure of the Business Plan
Every business is different, but a typical business plan would cover the following areas:
- The Business Proposal
- Business Premises
- Personnel
- Market Research
- Marketing Strategy
- Contingency Plans
- Finances
- Past performance and future cash flow
If your planning activity indicates that external funding will be required, there should be a section showing how much and when the funds are needed, and when this money will be recovered from business activities.
This document explains the sections above in more detail. If approaching a bank for funds, they may have their own preferred structure. However it will always be necessary to include predicted financial performance and a cashflow forecast.
Contingency plans
Your plan should show that you have considered the risks there are to your business. How do you intend to manage adverse circumstances such as a downturn in sales or unexpectedly high outgoings? For sole traders this might include how the business would survive if you were unable to work for some reason.
