Internet Research

There is a vast amount of information about different products, services and industries on the Internet.  Be aware that not all data comes from reliable sources, so check that any information you rely on is from an authoritative organisation and is up-to-date.

You can spend a lot of time searching for information on the Internet, so use search engine tools and directories to cut down the work.  There are many sources of help.

Search Engines

A search engine can trawl through millions of web pages to find those where a specific word or phrase appears.  The most popular search engines are:
but there are many others, which may search by country or by using other search engines.

Directories

There are many web based business directories, including the local Bristol Business Directory, which you can use to find potential customers, competitors or suppliers.  National directories include Yellow Pages, or you may want to find out about international companies from Kompass or Dun and Bradstreet.  There is probably an online directory that deals with your particular industry or market.  Trade bodies often have a directory of members who are qualified or accredited to work in that area.

Help with Internet research

If you don't have a PC you can get free Internet access at UKOnline centres and some of the Business Support agencies (see Here to help).  The Central Library business section also has staff who can help with specialised searches, and they stock a number of current trade directories.  Business Match can also help with a specific search.   Achieving best practice provides a series of booklets on using the Internet in business.

To update your skills in marketing you can register for an online course from Learndirect.  There is also a wealth of information from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.  The information service at Business West has specialist staff who can undertake research for you both on and offline.
