Business competitions and prizes can be a useful source of funding which also brings welcome publicity. Find out if you are eligible for one of the local or national award schemes for independent companies and individual entrepreneurs.
Local Awards
To celebrate Bristol's most successful entrepreneurs a new awards scheme has been launched by Bristol City Council. The Enterprising Bristol Awards aim to recognise the achievement of individuals or groups who have used creativity and innovation to achieve outstanding entrepreneurial success. Closing date is July 10 2006. Click here to download an application form.
The University of the West of England runs a business plan competition for UWE students and staff with winners gaining access to business incubator space and support. Bristol University has a similar scheme.
National Awards
National award schemes offering cash, publicity and other prizes include:
- The Barclays Trading Places Awards aim to recognise sole traders and smaller businesses less than three years old, who have overcome various barriers and battled against adversity to positively change their lives by setting up in business. Call 020 8673 2020 or visit the website. Closing date is May 26 2006.
- European Business Awards are open for applications until 31 July 2006. Categories include 'Entrepreneur of the Year', 'Business Innovation of the Year' and 'European Trade'. Businesses of all sizes and from any sector are eligible to enter the competition.
- The National Recycling Awards - Aim to recognise firms that make a positive effort to reduce their impact on the environment. The deadline for entries is 25 August.
- Business Enterprise Awards - the International Association of Bookkeepers (IAB) is asking for entries to its annual scheme. The competition recognises achievements in entrepreneurship, as well as best practice in accounting, bookkeeping and finance.
- If you are a company or charity with fewer than 500 employees that has used technology and new ideas to transform its business, why not put yourself forward for a Vision Innovation Award. Simply summarise the reasons why your company should receive this award and email in no more than 500 words.
- The Queens Awards for Enterprise take nominations between 21 April and October each year. The UK's most prestigious awards recognise innovation, sustainable development and international trade. Winning can boost sales and staff morale.
- The Enterprising Solutions Award recognises and champions the best social and community enterprises. If you are an inspirational enterprise driving social change, then register your interest in Enterprising Solutions 06 by email to win £10,000.
