Accessible Business

Is your business open for all?

From 1 October 2004 even the smallest businesses must comply with the duties imposed by the Disability Discrimination Act.   You may need to make reasonable adjustments to your premises and services to meet the needs of your customers and staff.

Clear signage can help people find their way into and around your business.  Appropriate training will ensure your staff know how to deal with each situation, so that levels of service are the same for everyone.  New technology can be used to support both staff and customers.

While there are no public funds for businesses to improve their disabled access, many disability organisations offer free guides and assistance.  For example the RNID is offering free training to small businesses on deaf and disability awareness until November 2005.

The need for accessible products and services has been recognised with the launch of a new British Standard
on managing inclusive design.
