Investors in People

Investors in People (IIP) is a national quality standard which sets a level of good practice for improving an organisation's performance through its people.  IIP is the only quality standard that focuses on people, so the good practices that are needed to become an Investor in People link well with other quality standards, such as ISO 9000 and the Business Excellence Model.

Business West is the local agency that helps Bristol businesses through the IIP process.

Investing in people works.  As thousands of organisations have discovered, people are an organisation’s most valuable asset, and the way to secure real, long lasting improvements in efficiency, productivity and performance.  IIP believe that for an organisation to achieve its objectives it must invest in its people, and they understand that an organisation needs to see a return on this investment.

The IIP Standard is built on 4 principles:
  • Commitment – an IIP is fully committed to developing its people in order to achieve its aims and objectives.
  • Planning – an IIP is clear about its aims and objectives and what its people need to do to achieve them.
  • Action – an IIP develops its people effectively in order to improve its performance.
  • Evaluation – an IIP understands the impact of its investment in people on its performance.

Business West run a highly successful ‘Don’t Just Survive – Thrive!’ one-day workshop, aimed at business decision makers with between 5 and 49 employees.  The output from this course is a 6-page tailored Action Plan, which will be followed up with a meeting with a Business Advisor to discuss how to implement the Plan.  Topics covered during the workshop include: the importance of goal-setting, keeping on track, developing staff for payback, leadership styles, creating a happy team and action planning for business improvement.
